STUDIOFORMA: Psycho-living for emotional well-being

STUDIOFORMA: Psico-abitare per il benessere emotivo
Psycho-architecture investigates the relationship between spaces and individuals, between emotions and places, studying which characteristics of the environment produce certain emotional responses. STUDIOFORMA, an architecture, design and lifestyle project in Florence, tells its story and introduces us to the topic.

STUDIOFORMA is an architecture, design and lifestyle project. We work synergistically, in a highly multidisciplinary environment, to give shape to the most diverse projects: from hotels to private homes, from restaurants to the design of urban spaces, from furnishing details to the composition of gardens and green areas. The professionalism that we put at the service of the client is a broad profession, a vision that does not focus solely on the aesthetic and functional dimension of space, but that expands in the direction of man, his emotional life and his unique and particular characteristics. Our work approach is certainly composite; the dialogue between different skills is for us a tool that responds to the complex set of needs of the client. The ability of our studio to range is based on the fusion of disparate, but not separate, disciplines: architecture and psychology.

STUDIOFORMA was actually founded by an architect and a psychologist psychotherapist, and has the individual at heart, their well-being and good quality of life as its driving objective.

We are inspired by the work that many colleagues and professionals carry out with the Psychology of Architecture, a discipline that has spread in the United States since the late 1950s and that deals with investigating the relationship between spaces and individuals and that highlights the relationship between emotions and places, studying which characteristics of the environment produce certain emotional responses. We are inspired by the study of character, which teaches us that everyone is unique, there is nothing that is right for everyone, everything must be personalized, including architecture. We are inspired by nature, which brings us back to archetypal and essential forms, nature that always reveals itself to be totally “home”. When we work we always keep in mind how deeply emotions are rooted from the first moment in every environmental and consequently architectural experience. We are inspired by the great masters of the past and the new trends together, and we are spurred on by the desire to do something that is “good”, that does “good”; we like to think that space can be cured.

The teaching of Alvar Aalto, and many others with him, represents a direction that is still too unexplored, the Loosian “Raumplan” is still little expressed, where spaces are configured by proportions and heights according to their functions and we add according to the sensations we want to experience inside a certain room. We live in environments increasingly distant from what is our original habitat, the earth, the trees, the streams... despite much talk of green and sustainability, contact with the elements has become increasingly feeble, mediated, interposed. For us it is of vital importance to recover this exchange, because every man has a fundamental and psychological need to relate to his natural environment, in order not to feel alienated, badly transplanted.

Here we as professionals choose to carry out a work of mending between man and earth by providing materials, forms that seal this ancestral and essential synergy. We believe that in order to feel "whole", safe, aligned, man must be welcomed by a space that resembles him; the emotional dimension becomes for us a coordinate of the design work. The experience of the individual represents one of the most significant directions that the professional can take to move his design work. Knowing the symbolism and the intentions of the client in order to give meaning to each room as the person feels it is a complex and subtle work at the same time, but it represents an essential viaticum if you intend to give shape not only to a shelter, but to a home, for the body, for the mind and for the spirit. The places are the scenarios within which the experience takes place, the experience gives rise to the experiences and this explains why the psychological and architectural dimensions are inextricably linked.

For STUDIOFORMA, good living is subordinated to the very particular relationship that each person has with the spatial dimension: traditions, passions, temperaments, peculiar singularities, each of these things must find ease, representation and translation in architecture.
Our working method, widely supported by constant studies in psycho-architecture, aims to create an exclusive relationship with the individuals who will inhabit, or simply use, those spaces that we shape: whether it is a personal and home environment, whether it is a work space or conviviality, each with its own specifics, for us the essential research is to pursue the creation of dedicated and healing places, because each environment defines a sensation and each sensory experience defines an environment. Those who decide to undertake a path of renewal or construction of a space, actually perform an act of great transformation, which has an impact not only on the environment, but also, and no less significantly, on personal experiences, an action that, in our opinion, must be honored in a conscious way by all the actors involved in the process. Bringing architecture back to the center for man, in the face of such a significant economic and emotional investment, is a research that aims to lead beyond the mere materialistic approach of the work, it is a mature path to build together, in order to define a reality that lasts over time.
We see architecture combined with psychology as a single compositional process that investigates man and delivers him a place. We are committed to building places where all the senses are involved, not only sight, often too spoiled by fashion, but also touch, stimulated by material textures, smell, awakened by natural essences, hearing, turned on by environmental “music” or silence.

STUDIOFORMA always defines the client's wishes as the basis of a preliminary knowledge process; then, as the relationship with the clients grows, it is enriched and articulated by integrating the individual's history, roots, tastes, needs and desires as a guideline for the work, this allows us to build something that is not only beautiful and functional, but that makes sense, emotionally speaking. Deepening this way of thinking and creating architecture is a gift that everyone should give themselves in life, reflecting on the importance that the place that hosts us has on each of us.
